Description

Indulge in the rich flavors of Spicy Chocolate Hazelnut Phyllo Cigars. Filled with creamy chocolate hazelnut spread, cream cheese and a touch of chili powder, these crispy treats are rolled in buttery phyllo dough and baked to golden perfection. Sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, they make a delightful dessert or snack.

Ingredients
  • 1 roll Athens® Phyllo Dough, thawed
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • ¾ cup butter, melted
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

Thaw one roll of phyllo, following thawing instructions on package. Preheat oven to 400°F. Unroll and cover phyllo sheets with plastic wrap, then a slightly damp towel to prevent drying out.

In a small bowl, combine cream cheese, chocolate hazelnut spread and chili powder (if using) until well blended.

Place one sheet of phyllo on work surface. Brush half of the sheet with butter, fold the other half on top, and brush the top with butter.

Place small dabs of filling in a strip one inch from the bottom and sides of the folded phyllo sheet. Fold the sides of the sheet over the ends of the filling, then tightly roll from the bottom into a cigar shape.

Repeat with remaining sheets and filling. Place cigars on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or nonstick foil. Lightly brush the tops and ends with the remaining butter.

In a small bowl, stir together sugar and cinnamon until blended. Sprinkle over the cigars.

Reroll unused sheets and follow storing instructions on the package.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until golden brown and crisp. Cool on a rack.

Serve warm or at room temperature. Keeps in an airtight container for several days.

TIP: If you prefer to pipe the chocolate filling, make a small slit in the bottom center of a large plastic baggie. Spoon filling into the bag and twist until the filling is at the bottom. Pipe a thin strip of filling along the folded phyllo sheet.
