Description
Indulge in the delightful swirls of cranberry magic, embraced by golden phyllo layers and complemented with a hint of zesty orange flavor. This Cranberry Roll Phyllo Tart from our friend Esra Mese adds a touch of surprise to every bite.
Ingredients
- 1 roll Athens Phyllo® Dough (9” x 14”), thawed
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
For filling:
- 8 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup butter
For sauce:
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 cup milk
- Orange zest (from the orange used for juice)
For topping:
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Directions
Thaw phyllo, following thawing instructions on package. Preheat oven to 350°F.
Butter 9-inch round cake pan and set aside.
In a saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, and water. Cook over medium heat until the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens (about 10 minutes). Remove the cranberry mixture from heat and let it cool slightly. Carefully transfer the cranberry mixture to a blender or food processor. Blend until you achieve a smooth consistency.
Lay out one sheet of phyllo dough and brush it lightly with melted butter. Place another sheet on top. Spread approximately 2 tablespoons of the blended cranberry filling over the entire surface. Roll the phyllo dough with the filling, creating a log. Then start to roll the log from edge to edge until you get a swirl. Place the rolled swirls in the buttered cake pan. Brush the top of the roll with more melted butter.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and sugar until well combined. Gradually whisk in the milk and orange zest. Pour over the half-baked rolls and continue baking for another 15 minutes.
Once the cranberry roll phyllo tart has cooled for a few minutes, slice it into servings. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
